Full Description
Traces of a possible Roman structure built between the mid second century and the mid third century have been recorded during archaeological investigations on the site of the Old Market Hall.
In 1939 a single wall [Wall L] was recorded to the south of the elliptical building and west of the bath complex although the evidence in this case was insufficient to determine whether this was an entirely separate structure or an extension of the bath complex. Later investigations in the 1960s revealed evidence of a layer of puddled clay interpreted as a possible building platform for a timber structure. (1)
