Monument record 8376 - Late Roman timber building at Northgate Brewery

Please read our .

Summary

Evidence of a late Roman building overlying an earlier timber barrack block was recorded during archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery in the 1970s. Although dating evidence suggested the building was added sometime in the late third century, the structural remains were insufficient to establish the form and function of the building and it is uncertain whether it was a later replacement of a stone barrack block or an entirely new structure.

Full Description

Traces of a late Roman timber structure were recorded during archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery site between 1974-75 in trenches 4 & 5 overlying the legionary barracks block (CHER 8374). The evidence comprised a rubble deposit [Feature F39] sealing the earlier structural features in trench 5 and forming a rough surface into which a series of post and stake holes were cut.

In this phase of activity several pits were also cut and the alley to the north restored as an access indicating a change from the earlier arrangement of stone centurial quarters and legionary barracks block. Although dating evidence was limited, it was tentatively suggested that this timber structure was added in the late third century over the site of an earlier stone barrack. (2)
