Summary

Evidence of the northern end of the final barrack block of the cohort to the west of the via Decumana was recorded during archaeological investigations at the former Northgate Brewery in the 1970s. This site lies within the retentura or the rear ward section of the fortress that was almost entirely given over to barracks for four cohorts, one to either side of the via Decumana (Northgate Street) and one in the north east and north west corners of the fortress. There appears to have been a final phase of timber construction in the fourth century, for which tiled and flagged floors have been found. Traces of an early timber framed building was recorded comprising the north external wall and traces of the weast and east external walls. Evidence of a possible timber lined latrine pit in the area of the veranda was also encountered. Legionary barrack blocks each accommodated a century of 80 men plus their officers, and were normally arranged in groups of 6 (a cohort of 480 men). Narrow streets gave access to facing pairs of barracks. The centurions' quarters were situated at the ends of the barracks, adjacent to a major road - either the perimeter road (via sagularis) or main transverse street (via principalis). The centurions' quarters were divided from those of the rank-and-file by a narrow alley. They were wider than the men's quarters but lacked a veranda. In ground plan they consisted of a corridor with rooms (including a private latrine) opening off on each side. The men's quarters consisted on 14 (later 11 or 12) units of two rooms for approximately eight men, fronted by a veranda that often contained an enclosed latrine at one end. The outer room was used to store equipment; the inner was for living and sleeping and contained a hearth. Only 10 pairs of rooms should have been needed to accommodate a century; the purpose of the spare rooms is uncertain. The first barracks were constructed using a timber frame with wattle-and-daub infilled panels. These timber barracks underwent a varying number of re-buildings in a relatively short period of time. From about AD 100, there was intermittent rebuilding in stone (perhaps with timber superstructures). However, there were also periods of abandonment. A comprehensive rebuilding was finally undertaken in the early third century. These barracks had much the same plan as their timber predecessors. A diminished number of barracks continued to be occupied into the fourth century.

Full Description

Evidence for a timber structure interpreted as the northern end of a legionary barrack block was recorded during archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery site between 1974-75. The evidence comprised two parallel walls in trench 4 [Feature H46 and H47] on an east-west alignment and a further east-west aligned wall to the west in trench 5 [Feature H49] on a similar alignment to wall H47 in trench 4. (2)

The features H47 & H49 were interpreted by the excavators as the northern wall of the legionary barrack blocks while H46 may have belonged to a separate building, possibly the centurion’s house to the north (CHER 8373). A possible post pit belonging to the veranda was also recorded to the east and appeared to be enclosed at the northern end by an extension of the north external wall. Little else can be said about this structure given the extremely limited nature of the features recorded however it would appear the barrack was 11m wide, much larger than the 9.5m wide structures at the Old Market Hall site. (2)

The evidence for the stone built barrack block remained equally slight due to the limited nature of the excavation. No evidence of a structure was recorded during the mid second century comparable with the early stone phase of the centurions house (CHER 8373). While the evidence from the late second century and the main stone phase of the centurion’s house comprised just traces of a possible post pit from the barrack block veranda, a cess pit dug into the veranda floor may indicate the creation of latrine in this area, and a stone paved surface from trench 4. The only traces of walls were recorded in trench 5 where the corner of two intersecting walls was recorded [Wall W25 & W26] along with traces of accumulation deposits. (2)
