Full Description

Recent archaeological investigations to the south of Chester Cathedral recorded a soil deposit containing Roman material underlying the Roman structural evidence from trench 2a (CHER 8278). The base of the trench was recorded at a depth of 2m below ground level immediately overlying which was a layer of degraded sandstone. Directly above this was the first evidence of activity in the Roman period with a buried subsoil and soil layer containing Roman pottery. (1)
