Monument record 8200 - Roman surface at the Cathedral

Please read our .

Summary

Limited archaeological investigations carried out to the north of Chester Cathedral recorded a sandstone surface with a shallow drain or gutter cut into it. Although dating evidence was limited, it would appear they were Roman in origin, however due to the limited nature of the investigation their full extent could not be explored. This area of the fortress was believed to be occupied by barrack blocks, however, as yet only limited traces of Roman activity has been recorded.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations to the north of the Chapter House were carried out in advance of the construction of a new Song School for Chester Cathedral. The earliest features encountered was a worn sandstone surface into which a shallow drain or gutter had been cut. Although recorded at a relatively shallow depth (0.55m) the features appear to be Roman in origin. (1)

It is possible that these features relate to a barrack block in insula 19 of the Roman fortress (1)
