Description

An archaeological evaluation undertaken in advance of the construction of a lift and stair tower in the angle formed by the porch at the end of the slype and the northern part of the cloister east range. This area was formerly within an undercroft beneath an eastern arm of the dorter. A trench measuring 5.25m north-south by a maximum of 5m east-west was excavated. The earliest recorded features were a Roman gutter and associated surface, and pits containing disarticulated human bone that might be Saxon in date. The foundations for the medieval undercroft were identified, and evidence of its demolition in post-medieval times.
