Full Description

Archaeological investigations at Goss street in 1973 recorded traces of early Roman activity comprising a number of deposits of grey sand and turf material covered by a spread of darker material. The deposits contained occasional fragments of ash and ferrous slag. Several features cut into these deposits were interpreted as possible stake holes.

These features were interpreted as primary layers deposited during the site preparation and clearance of the area in advance of the construction of the fortress with the stake holes possibly referring to temporary fence or boundary lines. Few finds were recovered from this phase of activity, however, although stratigraphically they predate the earliest evidence of the fortress. (1)
