Full Description
Archaeological investigations along the north rampart of the Roman defences encountered the remains of a rampart building in Deanery Field in 1952. A trench cut across the earth rampart recorded a cross section of the rampart building confirming a width of 7.2m with a north external wall on an east-west alignment of eight courses of good quality mortar bonded sandstone surviving to a height of 0.97m above the clay and cobble foundation. Only the lowest course of the south wall survived above foundation level, both walls were 0.60m thick. A cross wall c0.60m thick on a north-south alignment was also recorded much of which had been robbed away. (1)
Several deposits were recorded within the rampart building including a layer of clean building debris in the north end of the structure approximately 0.65m thick level with the foundation of the wall interpreted as a construction deposit.(1)
