Summary

A series of archaeological investigations carried out at the Deanery Field in the 1920s and 1930s recorded substantial evidence of Roman legionary quarters. Legionary quarters comprised six barrack buildings for the regular soldiers and six centurial houses for the officers. Deanery Field lies within the retentura or the rear ward section of the fortress that was almost entirely given over to barrack blocks for four cohorts, two each on either side of the via Decumana (Northgate Street). Traces of a north south aligned road between the first two barrack buildings in the north east corner of the fortress were identified during archaeological investigations in 1935. On this occasion only one road surface was discovered with no associated finds.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations on the east side of the Deanery Field in 1935 recorded traces of a poor quality metalled surface, interpreted as a road, between two north-south aligned structures believed to be barrack blocks (CHER 8341 & 8342). The surface comprised a thin layer of crushed sandstone devoid of any finds. (1)
