Summary

A series of archaeological investigations carried out at the Deanery Field in the 1920s and 1930s recorded substantial evidence of Roman activity. Traces of a north-south aligned road was recorded between two buildings at the Deanery Field during archaeological investigations in 1922 and again in 1924. The road comprised several successive surfaces of crushed sandstone.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations at Deanery Field in 1924 by Prof Newstead recorded evidence of several layers of metalled surfaces comprising broken rock with an infilling of soil and sand. A substantial clay hearth was also recorded on the eastern side of the road with a bronze brooch immediately underlying it (CHER 8349). (1)

A continuation of this road was identified during subsequent archaeological investigations immediately to the north by Prof Newstead in 1928. (1)
