Full Description

Archaeological investigations at the Dark Row, Chester’s fully enclosed Eastgate Street Row, recorded evidence of a stone structure (Phase 3a of the report) comprising two sandstone rubble foundations [107 & 104] at the eastern end of the trench and extending some 0.80m on a north-south alignment, traces of the first course of the wall were also recorded. As no trace of a return wall was recorded from the north terminal of the wall it is likely this formed a pier base.

At the western end of the trench another foundation cut on a north-south alignment was encountered [81; 86]. This feature was narrower than the foundation to the east but extended across the full width of the trench.

The nature of the foundations would suggest that they formed either internal walls or pier bases for a larger structure. No dating evidence was recovered from this phase with the exception of one residual sherd of coarse pottery (1)
