Full Description
Archaeological investigations at the Dark Row, Chester’s fully enclosed Eastgate Street Row, recorded traces an early timber building comprising two beam slots on a broadly north-south alignment at either end of the trench truncating the earlier evidence [Features 119; 102]. Traces of carbonised wood recovered from the slots suggest burning may have occurred nearby but not in situ. (Phase 2b of the report)
It is suggested that the area in front of the Legionary Commander’s House (CHER 8379) was occupied by a series of small shops or tabernae and the evidence represents part of the timber phase of construction in the late first to mid second century. (1)
