Full Description
Evidence of Roman activity was recorded during archaeological investigations in advance of work to the floor in Chester Cathedral. A possible demolition layer was recorded at the base of evaluation trench 3 at a depth of 1.1m below the floor. Although the deposit was not fully investigated as it was below the level of impact of the new works it was seen to contain substantial quantities of Roman tile and mortar fragments. A probable late Roman surface was also recorded overlying the building debris. (1)
Traces of Roman activity including a possible pit and a post hole were also noted in evaluation trench 3 they could only be tentatively identified based on limited dating evidence (1)
