Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological investigations carried out in 1954 and 1956 on the site of the Roman granaries in Commonhall Street recorded traces of an earlier Roman timber built structure between Granary 1 & 2. Evidence of a hearth was also encountered close to several post holes representing the building suggesting this structure was not related to the later stone built granaries.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations carried out in 1954 and 1956 on the site of the Roman granaries in Commonhall Street (CHER 8334, 8335, 8336) recorded traces of an earlier Roman timber built structure between Granary 1 & 2.

Trench 12 recorded traces of a hearth and sandstone kerb near the south wall of Granary 1 while two post holes were also recorded in such close proximity that one likely replaced the other. Unfortunately no dating evidence were recovered from these features (1)
