Summary

Evidence of an early Roman timber framed building was encountered underlying the third granary at Commonhall Street. Although only fragmentary evidence of the building was discovered it is possible that it relates to an early timber phase of construction for the granary site.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations carried out in 1954 and 1956 on the site of the Roman granaries in Commonhall Street (CHER 8334, 8335, 8336) recorded traces of an earlier Roman timber built structure underlying Granary 3.

Trench 11 identified a series of levelling layers including a base layer of broken sandstone overlain a layer of clean yellow sand into which three post holes were cut. The evidence was recorded underlying the early second century south external wall of Granary 3. (1)
