Full Description

Archaeological investigations carried out in 1954 and 1956 on the site of the granaries in Commonhall Street (CHER 8334, 8335, 8336) recorded traces of a substantial wall to the west. Trench 10 recorded traces of a two sections of a substantial Roman sandstone foundation on a north-south alignment to the west of the granaries. The relationship between the wall and the granaries could not be investigated it is suggested that it formed a colonnade for the granary complex as has been recorded at other sites, although no evidence of column bases were recorded at Chester (eg. Corbridge) (1)
