Full Description

Traces of an early Roman trample layer were recorded during archaeological investigations in 1954 and 1956 to the west of the granary site.

The excavation of a series of trenches (3-6) to the west of Granary 2 (CHER 8335) recorded traces of a series of layers of probable Roman date, the earliest being a trample layer sealed by a mortar spread containing a single sherd of black burnished ware of an early second century date. A pit dug into this layer contained pottery of a similar date and a small assemblage of animal remains. (1)
