Full Description
A quantity of Roman artefacts were recovered during construction work in Hunter Street in 1898 at a depth of approximately 2.1-3m, although no evidence of structural remains are recorded. (1)
The finds consisted primarily of bronze artefacts including two pins and two brooches (fibulae), also found were three coins of varying date, a domestic ceramic lamp and a glass vial. One of the brooches was considered to be an unusual example of a wild boar, possibly intended to represent the ensign of the Twentieth Legion stationed at Chester. In addition, quantities of Samian ware, amphorae and roofing tiles were also recovered, but not described. (1)
