Full Description
Roman architectural remains, represented by part of a large stone wall and a post hole, in addition to another possible dry stone wall (CHER 8452), were identified during the excavation of two trenches for sewerage improvements in 1996 (4). The wall and the large post setting were in the area nearest the road, and pottery from the lower foundations suggested a date for the construction no later than the latter part of the second century. The small size of the excavation area did not permit any interpretation of the building’s function, and no floor surfaces survived (4). Note that it is no information to demonstrate that this wall represents the same monument recorded by Newstead in 1927 (CHER 8450).
