Monument record 8450 - Edgar's Field - Possible Wall Footing

Please read our .

Summary

The vestiges of what may have been the footings of a Roman wall, or structure, were found during 1927 excavations in Edgar’s Field. There were two sandstone blocks, arranged in courses, but without mortar in between. The tentative nature of the interpretation is due to the fact that very little of this feature could be viewed at the time of excavation.

Full Description

During the 1927 excavations in Edgar’s Field (ECH3098), ‘the vestiges of what may have been the footings of a wall running obliquely across the trench, [2.02m] below the surface. The sandstone blocks were arranged in two, quite definite courses, but have not been bedded in mortar, though one bit of lime, about the size of a walnut, was found in the interstices of the structure’ (4). It was not possible to trace more of this potential structure during excavation, but the presence of roofing slabs and tiles in the surrounding deposits (e.g. CHER 8449/2, CHER 8381), was noted as evidence suggesting that a building(s) could be expected in this area (4).
