Description

In October 1927, excavations for the laying of a sewage pipe-line were carried out, and monitored by members of the Chester Archaeological Society (1). The trench is described as being of uniform width, 3 feet wide, and passed in a continuous line obliquely across the field from a point close up to the roadway, bordering the River Dee in the northwest, to within a few feet of the southeast corner of the field, where it intersected the main road leading through Handbridge. The depth of the trench was reported as nearly six feet in the northwest end, and eleven feet in the southeast. Deposits relating to the Roman quarry were observed (1) (2).
