Full Description

Archaeological investigations at St Andrew’s Church, Newgate Street in 2007 recorded evidence of a possible Roman occupation layer at a depth of approximately 1.50m below present ground level from Trench C to the west of the church. Only a small area of the layer was exposed during the evaluation however its composition of reddish clays intermixed with sandstone fragments and broken tile suggest it may be a Roman demolition layer. Pottery of a late second to early third century date was recovered from the top of this layer. (1)
