Full Description
Roman structural evidence was recorded at a depth of 70cm during limited archaeological investigation at Abbey Square in 1990. The evaluation noted a linear feature of sandstone rubble that had been largely robbed of reusable stone probably indicating an east-west aligned wall. The fill of the robber trench contained a single sherd of 4th century pottery. A number of surfaces were also recorded to the north of the wall feature and believed to be successive surfaces of a veranda.
Given the small scale nature of the excavated trench, interpretation proved difficult however. The structure is contained by insula 20 of the Roman fortress plan and its form and function is as yet unidentified (1)
