Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out a the foot of the flight of steps that lead from Abbey Sq. to the doorway at the northwestern corner of the cloister in Chester Cathedral. The trench was 1.4m by 1.2m, located roughly in the centre of the area being developed. Despite the site's proximity to the frater and cellar of the medieval abbey of St Werburgh's, the excavation revealed only Roman structures and possible veranda surfaces. Any other archaeological remains were likely truncated when the western claustral range was terraced into the ground.
