Summary

During the construction of the eastern sector of the Chester Inner Ring Road in 1970, periodic observation of the excavations led to the recovery of Roman pottery from Foregate St., near its intersection with City Road. Preliminary sorting revealed a small number of misfired and warped sherds, or wasters, of vessel forms like flagons, beakers, jars and mortaria, said to fall into the repertoire of forms dating to the early second century. Because of the wasters, it could be assumed that there was an as yet unidentified kiln nearby.
