Monument record 8302 - Extramural Farmstead, Clivenden Road, Northern Area

Please read our .

Summary

During a series of non-archaeological excavations during the construction of a sub-development along Cliveden Road between 1930 and 1935, several Roman features were identified and reported by Newstead, leading to the interpretation of this area as having been an extramural settlement or group of farmsteads at Saltney. This monument refers to the northern cluster of monuments: structural remains were identified (the remains of two walls, T-shaped in plan, described as being of very poor quality, made of 'odd bits of undressed sandstone, bits of Roman roofing tiles, boulders from the local drift), in addition to an occupation layer indicative of rectangular buildings stood in plots delineated by ditches. They were set in footings of sandstone and puddled clay, while the surrounding drainage ditches suggest the site was agricultural.
