Full Description

During a series of non-archaeological excavations during the construction of a sub-development along Cliveden Road between 1930 and 1935, several Roman features were identified and reported by Newstead, leading to the interpretation of this area as having been an extramural settlement or group of farmsteads at Saltney (5). At this particular location (Site 11), a Roman disc-shaped millstone was found, with a small amount of undatable pottery, and a number of small, roughly dressed blocks of sandstone in a tumbled formation. Part of this southern cluster of monuments and findspots, this area was interpreted as a farmstead, complete with agricultural ditches, dating from the second century (1).
