Full Description
In 1976 an extension was constructed to the rear of 76 Lower Bridge St. (then 'Napcolor'), entailing excavation of an area of c25 square metres in the backyard, to a depth of 0.75m below the existing surface. A post medieval brick hearth or furnace was revealed, which partially sealed an area of dumped deposits containing Roman period finds. The Roman pottery mostly dates to late first to early second century and a considerable number of amphora fragments were included, in addition to a small quantity of roof tile and glass, and a short length of Roman lead water-pipe with a graffito and a junction box from two lengths of pipe (1). Inscribed PRIVIS ATICVRTO (2).
