Full Description

In 1938, during construction of Littlewoods Store (29 - 35 Foregate St.), non-archaeological excavations for the heating shaft at the north end of the site (which extends c60m north of street frontage) produced Roman pottery from between 1.8 - 2.4m below the surface, but no structural remains (1).

Four shafts were sunk in a line with the kerb and produced a 0.35m layer, 2.3m deep, 'heavily charged with pottery'. 202 sherds were found ranging in date from the Flavian period to late third or fourth century, including Samian and coarse ware. A lead lamp holder was also found (1).
