Description
In 1938, during construction of Littlewood's Store at 29 - 35 Foregate St., excavations for the heating shaft at the north end of the site (which extends c.60m north of street frontage) produced Roman pottery 1.8 - 2.4m below the surface, but no structural remains. Four shafts were sunk in a line with the kerb and produced a 0.35m layer, 2.3m deep, 'heavily charged with pottery' (1).
