Full Description
A hard-packed, metalled sandstone surface comprised of small pebbles and sandstone fragments with a foundation of more substantial cobbles was recorded in Trench I during 1991 excavations in the area of The Bars, Chester (1).
There was a piece of first to third century black burnished ware embedded in the surface of the feature itself, with some additional pottery overlying. The surface was interpreted as probably part of a track or roadway running broadly north to south, somewhat parallel to the small stream identified during an earlier, neighbouring excavation (CHER 8033).
