Full Description
A soil layer containing exclusively Roman period pottery (dating to the first and second centuries) and ceramic building material was partially excavated during remedial works to the sandstone retaining wall at St Olave's Church, Lower Bridge St., Chester in 2010 (1).
The layer was seen to clearly extend beneath the Church, and had also been truncated by the Church's foundation trench. It could be that this deposit is contained within a cut feature whose edges were not revealed within the limits of the trench. Below this deposit was the natural clay subsoil (1).
