Full Description
Metalled surface of Roman date composed of small sandstone fragments or chippings, overlying the natural clay subsoil, found during excavations at the former St Augustine's Convent (1). As it was not very substantial, it was interpreted as a possible path or yard (1). Overlying this surface was a 0.07m deposit containing Roman pottery, with was interpreted as a dump that was either associated with, or immediately followed the use of this surface.
