Full Description

Limited archaeological investigation in the garden of Watergate House in 1949 recorded evidence of a substantial stone drain on an east-west alignment on the northern part of the site and a cement lined tank to the south. Later excavations in 1959 again recorded the alignment of the drain underlying the stone building which it did not appear to serve (2)

Archaeological investigations in and around Watergate House have recorded evidence of Roman structural remains. In late 1932 the first evidence of a building on the south side of the Roman road was identified when road widening encountered the angle of a substantial stone structure. Later investigations at Watergate House recorded a cement lined tank and drain in 1949 although no further evidence of the structure was encountered. Finally in 1959 more substantial investigations recorded evidence of at least two phases of buildings.
