Summary

Shops with flats over The Parade The Parade Parkgate A modest example of inter-war “International Modern Movement”, designed by J S Allen and illustrated in the Architectural Review in 1935. It has a flat roof behind a parapet, and all the walls are rendered and painted white. There are small paned horizontally proportioned windows to first floor, the present frames are probably replacements of the original steel windows. On the ground floor, the original horizontally proportioned steel windows still remain below a cantilevered balcony. A bizarre “Jazz Modern” window with zig-zag glazing bars survives at rear. This was an attempt to introduce “Seaside Resort” architecture to The Parade, a reminder that before WWII there was still sand and a daily tide below the sea wall at Parkgate.
