Description
Shops with flats over The Parade
LL62 (Previously LL PG/1)
Address: The Parade, Parkgate
Architect: J S Allen
Date: 1935
Description
A modest example of inter-war “International Modern Movement”, illustrated in the Architectural Review in 1935.
Flat roof behind parapet, all walls rendered and painted white. Small paned horizontally proportioned windows to first floor, present frames are probably replacements of the original steel windows. Ground floor, the original horizontally proportioned steel windows remain below a cantilevered balcony.
A bizarre “Jazz Modern” window with zig-zag glazing bars survives at rear.
An attempt to introduce “Seaside Resort” architecture to The Parade, a reminder that before WWII there was still sand and a daily tide below the sea wall at Parkgate.
Condition
Good.
Current Use
In use as 2 shops with flats over.
