Monument record 5044/2 - The Medieval Period at Oversley

Excavation at Oversley Farm 1997-1998 in advance of runway expansion at Manchester Airport

The enigmatic ditched enclosures that criss crossed the excavation area are attributed to this phase. At the northern end of the westernmost enclosure were the traces of a rectangular timber structure and 50m to the south of this were two large pits of uncertain function. The dating for this phase is based purely on the ceramic evidence which suggests a date range of late fourteenth to sixteenth century, although the lack of cistercian-type wares in the assemblage may indicate a date prior to c. 1500 AD.
