Monument record 5043/2 - The Romano British Period at Oversley Farm

Excavation at Oversley Farm 1997-1998 in advance of runway expansion at Manchester Airport

The structure described in the previous phase (MCH15397) had fallen into disuse and the postholes had been filled in. Domestic waste in a silt layer over the hollow way suggests that occupation continued nearby, perhaps outside of the area of excavation. Subsequent layers of water worn pebbles and layer of compacted brown gravel were deposited and are thought to represent a Roman road probably constructed in the mid-late-second century AD. Although the alignment of this road respects the earlier prehistoric way it's alignment suggests that it may be part of a postulated road running between Middlewich to the south and Manchester to the north.
