Full Description
<1> Ormerod, G., 1882, The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, Ormerod G 1882 2/784 (Book). SCH1389.
Supposed site of chapel opposite entrance to Rowton Hall. Ormerod notes that it was converted into a farmhouse. Old gothic windows remained and ten commandments on kitchen walls. Flooring of kitchen was gravestones. Taken down c.1814

Local tradition says ancient chapel at Rowton stood on site of house occupied by John Day in Claypits Lane. Believed cellar of present house was formerly chapel. Cellar situated at north end of house and is much earlier that rest of the building. Entered by stone steps outside house. Brick with stone work and flag stone floor. Two square headed mullioned windows. John Day, owner/occupier, confirmed this was traditional site of chapel. No entrance to Rowton Hall opposite this building. No definite evidence to associate this cellar with the early chapel (

Farmhouse: early C18 with mid-late C18 remodelling. English garden wall bond orange brick. Welsh slate roof and 3 brick chimneys. Rectangular plan. 3-storey, 3-bay front. End bays have tripartite sashes with glazing bars under flat wedged stone heads and with stone sills. 16-pane sashes in top storey (1 false). Central bay has a wooden doorcase with a triangular pediment and marginal panels. This contains a 5-panelled door with raised fields. Similar windows above. Gables have flat stone coping and show some stone quoining. Interior: not inspected but plain baluster stair visible. Provisional list records some early doors and an inscribed stone, recording the site of a chapel, is reported in the cellar.
