Full Description
The site of the Roman South Gate is thought to coincide with the present St Michael’s Church (currently Chester Heritage Centre) extending across the Roman via praetoria (Bridge Street).
Concrete foundations recorded in this area have been reported on several occasions – in 1887 foundations extending over an area of 4.3m were reported by G W Shrubsole close to the tower and steps of the church. The concrete was said to be extremely hard with a substantial quantity of mortar used. (1)
Subsequently in 1908, excavations of a drain leading from No 63 Bridge Street also encountered concrete foundations comprising small boulders embedded in mortar immediately north of the church, with another 1.75m of foundations to the south reported by Prof Newstead. Although the concrete foundation beneath the footpath was removed, the section beneath No 63 was left in situ (2)
