Full Description
<1> Harris, B.E. (ed), 1987, Victoria County History - A History of the County of Chester: Volume I, p.102 (Book). SCH3556.
A later Bronze Age hoard, found at Broxton, consisting of a trunnion chisel, eight inches long; two looped palstaves with trident decoration, six inches long; basal looped spearhead with leaf-shaped blade and lozenge-faced loops, ten and a half inches long.
<2> Evans J, 1881, The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments, of Great Britain And Ireland, p.90, p.169, p.330-1 (Book). SCH254.
A very large example of a chisel (illustrated) was found in company with two looped palstaves and a spear-head near Broxton, Cheshire. In the collection of Sir P. de M. Grey Egerton, Bart.
<3> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ45 SE 2 (Index). SCH2487.
Present whereabouts unknown.
<4> Longley D, 1977-1978, Longley Archive, no.305 (Paper Archive). SCH2005.
Suggestion that the Broxton Hoard may have belonged to the Acton Park phase of the Middle Bronze Age when Wales was a production centre. Enquiries at Grosvenor and Manchester Museums failed to trace the hoard and it is no longer with the Egerton Grey family.
<5> Varley, W. J. & Jackson, J. W., 1940, Prehistoric Cheshire, p.107, schedule III (Book). SCH2692.
<6> Shone W, 1911, Prehistoric Man in Cheshire, p.56 (Book). SCH2710.
<7> Yates, GC, 1895, Bronze Implements of Lancashire and Cheshire, p.129, p.134 (Article in Journal). SCH9014.
Two other looped palstaves (six inches) were found with a chisel and a spear head at Broxton, Cheshire.
<8> Egerton P, 1871, Agreement to remove mound, DEO 200/15 (Manuscript). SCH223.
An agreement to remove a large mound at Broming Field, Broxton in 1871 by order of Sir Philip Egerton may indicate when and where this hoard was found.
<9> Davey P & Forster E, 1975, Bronze Age Metalwork from Lancashire and Cheshire, 166 (Monograph). SCH488.
<10> Varley W J, 1964, Cheshire Before the Romans, figs 27-8 (Book). SCH784.
