Monument record 1785/2 - Medieval Road or Track

Please read our .

Summary

Two parallel headlands (CHER 4661) appear to respect another pre-existing landscape feature such as a road or track. The headlands have not been traced for any appreciable distance beyond Wetreins Lane and Wetreins Farm Moat (CHER 1788). However they align with a series of narrow fields depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 6” to 1 mile map, suggesting that the pre-existing linear landscape feature continued to Morrislake bridge where it would meet Watling Street (CHER 1700/1/0). The southern end connects with the southern section of the green lane at Caldecott Green (CHER 1785/1). This suggests that this feature is a road or track, possibly replaced or superseded in the late medieval period by the northern part of CHER 1785/1. It is not clear how this fits in with the observations of a road, interpreted as Roman Watling Street, at various locations in the vicinity of this of this monument. Probably an earlier alignment of the northern section of CHER 1785/1.

Full Description

Two parallel headlands (CHER 4661) appear to respect another pre-existing linear landscape feature. The headlands have not been traced for any appreciable distance beyond Wetriens Lane and Wetreins Farm Moat (CHER 1788). However they align with a series of narrow fields depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st Edition 6” to 1 mile map (see 2), suggesting that the pre-existing linear landscape feature continued to Morrislake bridge where it would meet Watling Street (CHER 1700/1/0). The southern end connects with the southern section of the green lane at Caldecott Green (CHER 1785/1). This suggests that this feature is a road or track, possibly replaced or superseded in the late medieval period by the northern part of CHER 1785/1. It is not clear how this fits in with the observations of a road, interpreted as Roman Watling Street, made by AC & E Waddelove (See ECH2722) at various locations in the vicinity of this of this monument. Probably an earlier alignment of the northern section of CHER 1785/1 (1).
