Monument record 1700/1/7 - Roman Road - Barton Road (Chester to Wroxeter Route 6a)

Please read our .

Summary

Watling Street Roman Road represented by a causeway, in places 0.6m high and 6m wide from SJ43565435 to 43555417 and then by a ridge as far as SJ435537. When the course of the road is projected south, it meets this section at Wetreins Farm (1700/1/6). This suggests that the road turns through a 50 degree angle at this location. It may also suggest that this section of the road is a later link and 1700/1/6 may have continued on to Farndon or Holt. It also notable that the the projected line of this road would meet 1785/1 a possible Roman or medieval road to the south of Wetreins Farm . Subsequent investigation has suggested these features are natural. Watling Street is the name given to the roman road that links Chester with Wroxeter, and Caerleon. The route of the road can be followed from Chester to its crossing point of the Dee at Aldford and then onto Malpas where it disappears from the landscape. It is not to be confused with the Watling Street that runs from the SE coast through London then onto Verulamium ( St Albans) and (Viroconium) Wroxeter.
