Monument record 1700/1/6 - Roman Road - Wetreins Farm (Chester to Wroxeter Route 6a)

Please read our .

Summary

Watling Street Roman Road traced for 900m from near the Wetreins to Wetreins Farm. This indicates that the road does not run through Stretton Hall, as usually thought. When the northern course of the road (1700/1/7) is projected south, it meets this section at Wetreins Farm. This suggests that the road turns through a 50 degree angle at this location. It may also suggest that this section of the road may continue on to Farndon or Holt and that the road to Chester is a later link. It also notable that the the projected line of 1700/1/7 would meet 1785/1 a possible Roman or medieval road. Watling Street is the name given to the roman road that links Chester with Wroxeter, and Caerleon. It is not to be confused with the Watling Street that runs from the SE coast through London then onto Verulamium ( St Albans) and (Viroconium) Wroxeter. The route of the road can be followed from Chester to its crossing point of the Dee at Aldford and then onto Malpas where it disappears from the landscape.
