Full Description
Roman road. In the bank of a small stream which cuts the road obliquely at SJ 4721 6737, there is a foundation of sandstone rubble set in mixed clay carrying a layer of pebbles. Above these are a 0.15m thick layer of red and yellow sand, another band of sandstone rubble and a 0.1m thick stratum of cobbles and pebbles. These features would seem to suggest a complete reconstruction rather than a resurfacing (1) & (2).
