Description
Evaluation work on proposed eastern and western extensions to Crown farm Quarry investigated the line of the Roman road, the 'Plague Hole', and a 19th-century mineral railway whose line coincides with that of the Roman road in the western area. Augering revealed that the Plague Hole was a recent feature and that the Roman road did not survive in the eastern area. In the western area traces of the roman road were located and sections were obtained through the embankment of the mineral railway. Pottery from the base of one of the sections showed that the construction was of 19th or 20th-century date.
