Summary

Grade II* listed Church of St James. A church here is not mentioned in Domesday though it probably does date to before the Conquest. It was granted as a 'Capella de Christleton' to the Abbey of St Werburgh before 1093 by Robert Fitz Hugh. After the Dissolution the right to appoint a priest to this church fell into private hands. The present building was restored in 1874-77 by W Butterfield and has a late 15th century tower. The church is built of ashlar red sandstone with a slate roof. The tower has diagonal buttresses and a stair turret. The pyramid cap is an addition by Butterfield. Inside, it is decorated with red and white sand-stone. There are also painted panels of royal arms dated 1665.
