Full Description
Milestone: Plaque probably 1824; stone replaced in the late twentieth century. Lancet shaped buff sandstone block supports cast-iron plaque recording distances to London 175m, Macclesfield 5m and Stockport 7m. A complete example survives on London Road North, Poynton (1).
Sandstone milestone with lancet shaped head resited on renewed pavement well set-back from the busy trunk road. The monument is in good condition, although chipped, and clearly visible on the corner of a new entrance into Abbey Court new housing development. The stone stands 1.22m high by 0.46m wide by 0.13m deep at the base. A cast iron plate bolted to the stone is inscribed in raised capitals 'From London 174 Miles From Macclesfield 7 Miles To Stockport 5 Miles. The cast plate measures 0.46m wide by 0.61m wide by 2.5cm thick. The plate is painted white with black lettering (2 & 3).
