Summary

The sandstone shaft of a seventeenth century cross or sundial. The top of the shaft includes a central socket with a lead fixing from which the square plate, presumably of a sundial, has been removed. The sandstone shows signs of natural erosion but otherwise the structure is in reasonable condition.

Full Description

Aston Cross. Shaft of cross or sundial, probably 17th century, of red sandstone. Triangular base of two steps, square plinth, stop-chamfered shaft, square head has slightly raised square panel, with central sinking on top, looking like the base for a removed sundial (1). Full architectural description (1) and (2). Shaft 0.9m high and 0.3m square, standing on two triangular steps with sides 0.9m and 1.8m and 0.3m high. Forms a traffic island at a road junction (3).
