Summary

Horton's Mill. First mentioned 1343 as 'Mulnehalgh'. The location near Bate's Mill Bridge suggests that the surname Bate was once applied to the mill as well as that of Horton. In 1965 the mill was described as a 3-storey part brick & part stone building with some lattice windows. The mill worked up to c.1962. The wheel was of breast-type, 14ft x 5ft wide & the machinery remained. An attractive pool was located on the other side of the road. The mill was rebuilt by the Tollemache Estate in the 19th century and is now converted into a house. Watermills are known to have been used in Britain during Roman and Saxon times. In the Domesday survey of 1086, around 6,000 mills were recorded. In medieval times each manor that the right to have its own mill with the peasants forced to use it. A tax was payable on all corn ground and there were fines for those to tried to mill corn in their own homes using hand querns.
